After leaving Valle Verzasca we headed towards Bellinzona. We did check how to get to via ferrata but it turned out not to be the right place. After 2 hours, few hundred meters up and down on tiny little roads we decided to stop for a coffee and check once again. Surprisingly (not!) it turned out we were in the right place the first time, but we do like to complicate our lifes sometimes and check shitty websites for info. Bit of spice is always fun. Mornera is the place where you want to end up and to do so you need to take a lift up from Monte Carasso. Easy. When already up in Mornera you take a path that is marked ‘Via ferrata’ and follow until you reach the starting point.
Walk till via ferrata is exceptionally beautiful. Most of the time you walk through the forest, you can stop by a little lake and refill your water bottle and just enjoy the view from there.
When you reach the wall that’s when the fun starts. The starting point is the same for all. After the first part you can choose the difficulty level. Perfectly marked so you won’t get lost and take the route you don’t want to. We chose ‘medium’. For the first time there it was a perfect choice. We had fun, didn’t want to die (it was damn hot) and it didn’t involve so much force that I was lacking on this day. Views are stunning and you seriously enjoy every step you make there.
It was time to go home and we chose the historic Gotthard Pass that touches four cantons: Uri, Ticino, Wallis and Graubünden. Stopped for a picknick and continued direction home- Broc.
Practical information:
Starting point: Monte Carasso (229 m), Mornera (1347 m)
Target: Sasso Torrasco (1690- 1740 m)
Difficulty: K3/K4-5, medium route is K3.
Altitude change: 300 – 350 m
Time: we took a medium route and it took us less than 2,5 hours from Mornera to the summit. Normally 3-3,5 hours (depending on the route chosen) should be calculated.
Tip: Get your lift ticket early. Lift can only take 8 people and it doesn’t run every 5 minutes. We had to wait an hour for our turn. Ticket price CHF 19.00 for an adult.
