Hikeabout #10: Matterhorn Training Trail

Hikeabout #10: Matterhorn Training Trail

Matterhorn Trainign Trail is not really a ‘hikeabout’, it is more ‘you’re going to get so tired and sweaty that you might forget what your name is and where your hotel/ home is’. If you’re in the middle of training for any trail event (for example: Matterhorn Ultraks) or just training for fun (not judging) that is the place you want to get your ‘vibrofat’ on. It is steep, not long, and altitude change is 600 m. There’s a little board on the way that tells you how happy (or not) you should be with your result. Many people use it also for training before ascending Matterhorn.  Remember: do not take your kids with you. Not a family hike, unless you’re a crazy fit training family.

So how can you get there?

You can walk up from the village to Hotel Cervo and then continue a bit up (that’s a nice warm up already) or to make life easier take a lift from Sunnegga station and you find yourself already by Cervo. You will find a board saying Matterhorn Trail on your right hand side. Yes, that’s the start of it and yes, it is steep… You can take hiking sticks with you – makes it a bit easier.

Practical information:

Starting point: Zermatt (1680 m)

Target: Sunnegga (2288 m)

Hike lenght: it is not a long trail, just over 1 km but the steepness is something that makes it hard

Tip: Take hiking sticks! If you still did not have enough then you can continue your hike anywhere you want… Blauherd, Stellisee, Rothorn and then go down with one of the trails.

Good luck!
