Gastrostop #7: La Cambusa in Positano

Gastrostop #7: La Cambusa in Positano

La Cambusa, Positano, Amalfi Coast, Italy. Pasta, vino, frutti di mare! Yes! When I hear Italian I think seafood! In my head there’s a weird seafood connection with an Italian language. You can invite me somewhere to the restaurant  and as soon as I hear people speaking Italian I will most surely order seafood. Funny how the brain works (or maybe it’s only my brain).

La Cambusa is a restaurant in a stunning Positano on Amalfi Coast opened in the late sixties by Luigi Russo. Lonely Planet guide helped us to find some pearls. I am normally sceptic about guides but with this restaurant it was spot on.

It is in the center of town, up from always busy Chez Black. Not on the beach but a bit up. We went there twice during our stay in Positano and that already says a lot. When we arrived all we heard was Italian, which is already an advantage – Italian people not only English speaking tourists around, plus they were all locals. Can’t go wrong there!

For our first dinner we chose Antipasto misto di mare (starter mixed fish) to share, then Spaghetti ai frutti di mare (pasta with seafood and tomato sauce and Linguine con astice in bellavista (pasta with lobster). Mixed fish starter included: salmon, octopus, langoustine and a tiny worm lookalike fish I don’t remember a name of. Served on a bed of salad was a perfect choice to start our dinner with. Portion was huge! When the pasta arrived I was in heaven. Frutti di mare! Si!

Our second dinner was as good as the first one! Starter to share (since the portions as said before are quite impressive). This time we took Tartara di tonno (tuna tartare), which was served with really good strong wasabi, rucola and soya sauce. Then once again seafood pasta and Linguine con granseola (pasta with crab). All the dishes as perfect and tasty as before.

Italian food means good product and simplicity and that’s what you will find in La Cambusa. The one problem that I found is that we were so full that we couldn’t try their desserts that looked good as well.  If you’re around and you won’t go there… well, your problem. We did and if we ever go back to Amalfi Coast we will for sure eat there again.

Practical information:

Address: P.zza A. Vespucci- Spiaggia Grande,

               84017 Positano

Website: La Cambusa

Tips: Don’t get scared when you see the wine list and prices. Ask the waiter for wine recommendation. The one he recommended was really good and not expensive. Very nice service as well. All we ate was perfect and I guess you can’t go wrong with your choice there.
