Auberge du Chamois in Botterens is an oldschool bistro you could say. Inside? Old bistro style. In summer you can enjoy your meal on their terrace that overlooks Lake Gruyère and offers a stunning Swiss Prealps view. What about food? Well, let me just say I ate the best snails in my life there.
We went there few times already and we will be coming back for sure. Why? When we took my boyfriends granddad we had a feast. All of us took a menu and we ordered snails as a starter and a perch fillet for my boyfriend. I was not a ‘snail’ lover before. First time I had snails I was still quite small and it was by accident and I spit them out. That’s how much I loved them. Not that long ago I decided to give them another try and in Auberge du Chamois I had the best ones until now. For our main course we all took different types of meat: beef, lamb and veal with a side of chips and vegetables. All cooked to perfection and the portions! After that there was a choice of sorbets with or without alcohol.
Not that long ago we came back. Yes, we love our deer, roe, hare, boar etc. We took a menu again, which had enough to choose from. Three-four differents starters, mains and desserts. To start with we both took punpkin soup. Then Sam took dried boar meat and I took chef’s terrine. Meat just delicious and terrine you could say was made by them since it wasn’t even and a little tiny perfect piece. Yummy! For our mains we took: hare and deer loin with all traditional garnish. Portions: once again huge! Everything was perfect, except the Botzi pear (special type of pear that you can only get in the canton of Fribourg) that was a bit undercooked but it is a tiny detail. After that was time for desserts. Sam took assortiment of sorbets with some alcohol and I took vermicelles. Vermicelles is a Swiss dessert made from chestnut puree served mostly with cream, and sometimes with meringue and vanilla ice cream. I had it all. I couldn’t move. I don’t really have a sweet tooth but love vermicelles once in a while. Dinner was finished and we just really wanted to teleport ourselfes to bed without moving.
Auberge du Chamois in Botterens is a perfect place to stop by if you’re feeling hungry. Huge portions, good quality products, delicious meals, best snails ever. The card changes a bit depending on the season so there’s always something new to try. It’s not expensive for the quality and quantity of the food. We paid 60 Swiss Francs per person for our 4 course dinner last time.
