Via ferrata – ‘iron road’ – is something for rock lovers. Steel cable fixed to the rock every few meters can be fun for kids and the kids inside us. They were used in First World War as a passage for troops in Dolomites and now there is more than 1000 all over the world. Sounds like fun? It surely is.
In Zermatt there is 4 via ferratas. One ‘Klettersteig Mammut’ is a 3 part via ferrata that we’re going to write about today.
Klettersteig Mammut has part A, B and C.
Part A is the easiest one and you can take your kids with you (that are more than 10 years old). It is a perfect place to start your steel cable adventure. If you feel quite strong and are not scared of heights you can continue with part B and then C. They are all connected so it can be a one day via ferrata day trip.
How to reach it?
Walking up towards the church on the main street – Bahnhofstrasse, you have to turn right just before Gee’s Bar and follow the road up that is a trail up to Edelweiss. There will be a bench a bit up the trail and that’s where you have to turn right and you’ll see the sign for via ferrata A. Gear up and enjoy!
Via ferrata in Zermatt is for all of those rock lovers out there!
Tips:
– If you don’t feel strong enough to go on your own you can always go with a guide – book in Alpine Center Zermatt .
– many sport shops in Zermatt rent out via ferrata gear (you should have: helm, harness, via ferrata set, gloves, and proper shoes) – try Glacier Sport on the main street.
– just enjoy it!
